High Cotton

Pitch dark above the quarry lake -
   As far as eyes can see.
Nature's chorus fill the silence
   Of the night.
      frogs ... fish ... ducks ... geese ...
         an owl ... maybe two ...
            far away - coyotes.

All - deeply underscored by the hum
  of trucks on the highway -
     mere blocks away.
Such dichotomy, Kansas -
   the Dark : the Light
   the Hush : the Rush . . . . . . .
And a tiny mouse scurrying quickly away.
