The Dewlen-Spohnhauer Bridge stands as a silent sentinel over the Verdigris River, its graceful arches spanning the waterway east of Independence. The bridge, named in honor of two service men who died overseas, has been carrying people across the river for nearly 100 years, having been completed in 1928. It was listed on the National Historic Register in 1983.
